Dance Theatre of Harlem presented by Virginia Arts Festival
with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra
World premiere of a new work commissioned by Virginia Arts Festival
Since its founding in 1969, Dance Theatre of Harlem has become a symbol of ballet excellence around the world, winning acclaim for its performances of a broad repertoire that ranges from treasured classics to cutting edge contemporary works. As part of its residency project with the company, Virginia Arts Festival has commissioned Dance Theatre of Harlem to create a new ballet in honor of the Festival’s 20th anniversary, choreographed by DTH resident choreographer Robert Garland, and set to Johannes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn. The new work mixes the neo-classical style as taught and coached at Dance Theatre of Harlem by Arthur Mitchell, its founder, with elements of African American vernacular dance. Don’t miss the world premiere of this new work!
