Event Details
Born in Rock Island, Illinois in 1962, knew at the young age of ten years that he wanted to carry on the jazz legacy of his grandfather and father. Growing up in a musical environment, John developed a deep appreciation for Jazz.
At the age of 13 years John played his first Jazz Festival performing with his father’s band from Orlando, Florida. Already one of the best trombonists anywhere, John's father Bill played an important part in John's early development. Upon graduation from high school John relocated to Southern California to accept an engagement with a young dixie band, "The Jazz Minors" at Disneyland in Anaheim.
While living in Long Beach, California John became very active in the Music scene. Aside from John's interest in traditional jazz, he ventured into other musical styles. As a regular member of "Dave Wells' Trombone City" and recording with the "Los Angeles Jazz Workshop", John's versatility allowed him many opportunities to perform with big bands and Broadway type shows in addition to dixieland bands.
In 1986 John returned to Florida to work closer to his father. It was not too long before John was considered "first call" for many bands and shows. In 1987 John enthusiastically accepted an offer to join the Woody Herman "Young Thundering Herd" as a featured soloist. While with the "Herd" John worked with some of the biggest names in the business like Clark Terry, Stan Getz, Tony Bennett and Rosemary Clooney to name a few. During his engagement with Woody's band John played hundreds of clubs and colleges across the nation including Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center.
Following his travels with Woody Herman, John returned to Orlando to pursue other musical objectives. He performed with his father at many jazz festivals as well as making solo guest appearances.
In 1990 John on Euphonium, accepted a spot with the famed "Matteson-Phillips Tuba-Jazz Consort" which featured John alongside jazz great, Rich Matteson. This group organized in 1976 co-lead by famous tubist Harvey Phillips, recorded two albums and toured Australia and Switzerland.
In 1993 the after the untimely passing of Rich, the ensemble reorganized as the "Matteson-Phillips Tuba-Jazz Consort Featuring John Allred". The group plans to record a new album and continue performing clinics and concerts in the spirit of Rich Matteson.
Most recently John stepped out on his own, releasing his first solo recording, "In The Beginning..." Look for future releases from John including a duet CD with Rich Matteson and Louie Bellson. He has also recorded two CD's in Switzerland with Marc Jundt's "Kalibula Band". John has many album projects in the making including his second solo release and a duet album with his father bill.
John now freelancing out of Orlando, is making his mark on the international jazz scene. Traveling all over the states and abroad, John has played with such names as Warren Vaché, Allan Vaché, Ken Peplowski, Jake Hanna, Byron Stripling, Snooky Young, Ralph Sutton, Dan Barrett, Howard Alden, Major Holley, Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, Randy Sanke, Don Menza, Clark Terry, Scott Hamilton, Buddy Morrow, Red Rodney, Ira Sullivan, Milt Hinton, Bob Haggart, and many more.
John now a UMI (United Musical Instruments) artist, is available for clinics, concerts, recording work and guest appearances.
