100th Anniversary Community Celebration

Oct. 4 and 5, the historic Attucks Theatre will continue its celebration of the anniversary of its founding with the 100th Anniversary Community Celebration. The two-day celebration will add a community element to the Attucks Centennial celebration by inviting local artists and organizations to showcase the history of the Attucks and the various roles it has served in the community throughout each decade. The 100th Anniversary Community Celebration is hosted in partnership with the Attucks Centennial Commission, Crispus Attucks Cultural Center, Norfolk Public Library, SevenVenues and the Virginia Arts Festival.

The 100th Anniversary Celebration kicks off Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. with entertainment in the style of the 1920’s and 1930’s at the Attucks Theatre.  The celebration will continue Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Attucks Park located at the corner of Church Street and Virginia Beach Boulevard with an Arts in the Park celebration featuring various incubator groups that once held residence at the Theatre. The event will conclude Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Attucks Theatre, with performances highlighting musical performances throughout the decades, focusing on the 1940s-1950s.

Event organizer and Vice Chair of the Crispus Attucks Cultural Center Charles Johnson Jr. notes, “The Attucks has served multiple functions over the past century – it has served as a home for the arts, for various social and political platforms, as a retail store, and presently as a venue for commercial events. We planned the 100th Anniversary Community Celebration to pay tribute to the past and to cultivate future relationships with Church Street, the City of Norfolk, and the larger Hampton Roads community.”

While the event is free and open to the public, registration is required. Those interested in attending the event may pick up tickets at the Jordan-Newby Anchor Library branch until Weds. Oct. 2, or may register online here.
