SevenVenues Culture Club: May 2021

Welcome to the May 2021 SevenVenues Culture Club! With Mother's Day right around the corner, this month's selections are inspired by the famous mothers who have graced our stages over the decades. Our selections include tips on everything from raising babies, to healing after a tragedy, to finding faith.

In addition, don't forget International Harry Potter Day on May 2. If you weren't able to attend the Harry Potter Film Concert Series at Chrysler Hall, or simply want to relive those evenings, we've compiled a robust list of Harry Potter movie, soundtrack and book options, all available from our local libraries.

Not to be outdone by wizards and warlocks, Star Wars celebrates its own special day on May 4. The Virginia Symphony brought the music of Star Wars to Chrysler Hall on many occasions and now you, too, can enjoy these legendary soundtracks with the links on our list.

Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day and a few other noteworthy holidays round out this month's categories. Don't forget to tell us what you think and to make suggestions for next month by joining the SevenVenues Culture Club Facebook group.

Happy reading, listening and watching!

StarWarsTrilogy_Book.jpg   Star Wars Trilogy
George Lucas, Donald F. Glut, James Kahn

More than twenty-five years after the groundbreaking movie Star Wars: A New Hope first hit the silver screen, Star Wars remains one of the most beloved sagas ever told. Together, the three original Star Wars movies—A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi—told one epic: a heroic tale of innocence lost and wisdom gained, of downfall and redemption, of the never-ending fight between the forces of good and evil. Read the story of the movies—all three in one trade paperback volume—and rediscover the wonder of the legend that begins: a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

StarWars_Episode1_Book.jpg   Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace
Terry Brooks

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, an evil legacy long believed dead is stirring. Now the dark side of the Force threatens to overwhelm the light, and only an ancient Jedi prophecy stands between hope and doom for the entire galaxy.

StarWars_Episode2_Book.jpg   Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones
R.A. Salvatore

There is a great disturbance in the Force… From the sleek ships of the glimmering Coruscant skyscape to the lush gardens of pastoral Naboo, dissent is roiling. The Republic is failing, even under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, elected ten years earlier to save the crumbling government. Separatists threaten war, and the Senate is hopelessly divided, unable to determine whether to raise an army for battle or keep the fragile peace. It is a stalemate that once broken, could lead to galactic chaos.

Karen Traviss

Across the galaxy, the Clone Wars are raging. The Separatists, led by Count Dooku, the onetime Jedi and now secret Sith Lord, continue to press forward, and more and more worlds are either falling, or seceding and joining the cause. Under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, the Republic heroically battles on, championed by its huge army of cloned soldiers and their Jedi generals.

StarWars_RevengeSith_Book.jpg   Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
Matthew Woodring Stover

As the combat escalates across the galaxy, the stage is set for an explosive endgame: Obi-Wan undertakes a perilous mission to destroy the dreaded Separatist military leader General Grievous. Palpatine, eager to secure even greater control, subtly influences public opinion to turn against the Jedi. And a conflicted Anakin—tormented by unspeakable visions—edges dangerously closer to the brink of a galaxy-shaping decision. It remains only for Darth Sidious, whose shadow looms ever larger, to strike the final staggering blow against the Republic… and to ordain a fearsome new Sith Lord: Darth Vader.

StarWars_MakingOf_Book.jpg   The Making of Star Wars
J.W. Rinzler

After the 1973 success of American Graffiti, filmmaker George Lucas made the fateful decision to pursue a longtime dream project: a space fantasy movie unlike any ever produced. Lucas envisioned a swashbuckling SF saga inspired by the Flash Gordon serials classic American westerns, the epic cinema of Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa, and mythological heroes. Its original title: The Star Wars. The rest is history, and how it was made is a story as entertaining and exciting as the movie that has enthralled millions for thirty years—a story that has never been told as it was meant to be. Until now.

Chris Taylor

In How Star Wars Conquered the Universe, veteran journalist Chris Taylor traces the series from the difficult birth of the original film through its sequels, the franchise's death and rebirth, the prequels, and the preparations for a new trilogy. Taylor provides portraits of the friends, writers, artists, producers, and marketers who labored behind the scenes to turn Lucas's idea into a legend. He also jousts with modern-day Jedi, tinkers with droid builders, and gets inside Boba Fett's helmet, all to find out how Star Wars has attracted and inspired so many fans for so long.

“From the time I was young, Star Wars has been a part of my life. I do not necessarily remember seeing the original movies in the theater, but I certainly remember seeing them along the way. There is great anticipation from the entire family when the next movie is set to come out. The most significant thing for me is the unmistakable music written by John Williams. From the very first note that plays, you are immediately fully engaged knowing that you are about to watch one of the many movies from this iconic series. If they story lines do not intrigue you, then simply listening to the amazing music throughout each of the movies will be extremely entertaining. Music plays such a significant role in our lives, whether the main theme song or the background music that you may not even really hear all the time. Take a little time and enjoy just the music from some of your favorite movies. I have a feeling it might bring back fond memories from a time long, long ago.

May the 4th be with you!"
