SevenVenues Culture Club: February 2021

SevenVenues, in partnership with Hampton Roads public libraries, has launched a new opportunity for our patrons to read books, listen to music and watch videos that expand their experience as audience members. Since our venues remain closed, it has been difficult to experience the arts, so, with help from Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach Public Libraries, we are bringing the arts to you.

Each month, beginning this February, the SevenVenues Culture Club will present a curated selection of book, music and video recommendations based on artists or performances that have appeared or will appear at a SevenVenues property. As you navigate the page, you'll notice the selections are grouped by Book, Music and Video categories.

Book_Icon.png   Book selections will range from the biographies of prolific SevenVenues performers, novels and autobiographies written by past speakers, and historical literature related to famous operas and symphonies whose music has filled the halls of the Harrison Opera House.

Music_Icon.png   Music selections will range from artists who performed on the stage of the Attucks Theatre in the 1930s and 40s to more recent rock concerts at Scope Arena.

Video_Icon.png   Video selections will include musicals and documentaries related to Broadway tours and international productions that have passed through Chrysler Hall, Scope Arena and the Wells Theatre.

The library’s logo will appear next to the selection if they carry it. For your convenience, all the logos are hyperlinked to go directly to the selection on the library’s website. With the click of a button, you’ll be on your way to the theatre!

Don’t have a library card? Not to worry. You can review instructions on how to obtain a library card by clicking on your library’s logo below.

We encourage participants to meet new people and broaden their cultural network by joining the SevenVenues Culture Club Facebook group - click here to join. We want to hear from you! Please share your comments and suggestions for books, movies and videos, and let us know what you think about February’s selections. Remember, recommendations must be based on artists or performances that have appeared or will appear at a SevenVenues property.

We look forward to sharing SevenVenues rich history with you each month via the SevenVenues Culture Club. Happy reading, listening and watching!

ArethaFranklin_Respect.jpg   Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin
David Ritz

AmericasMistress_EarthaKitt.jpg   America’s Mistress: The Life and Times of Eartha Kitt
John L. Williams

Eartha Kitt was a skinny, mixed-race woman with an odd, angular face, who seduced fifties white America into thinking that she was, in the words of Orson Welles, 'the most exciting woman in the world'. She could count Marilyn Monroe, T.S. Eliot, Prince Philip and Albert Einstein among her friends and admirers, and was almost able to forget she had once been a poor black girl from the Deep South. But her new persona was also a prison from which she found it impossible to escape. John L. Williams' moving and unsettling biography shows a star adrift in a bewildering new America torn apart by the Civil Rights movement. Shunned by many of her former friends, shocked by her country's insiduous racism, and with a perilously fragile sense of her own identity, Eartha Kitt would pay the price that came from trying to be America's mistress.

At eight years old and back at her mother's side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age--and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors ("I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare") will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.

Ella Fitzgerald, an artist who was called a national treasure - and no one ever disputed the laudation - has continued to captivate an international audience for more than 50 years. Her inimitable voice was heard in intimate clubs, in concerts, on radio and television, and continues to be heard on countless recordings. First Lady of Song is a celebration of her life and work. BlackBroadway.jpg   Black Broadway: African Americans on the Great White Way
Stewart F. Lane

The African-American actors and actresses whose names have shone brightly on Broadway marquees earned their place in history not only through hard work, perseverance, and talent, but also because of the legacy left by those who came before them. Like the doors of many professions, those of the theater world were shut to minorities for decades. While the Civil War may have freed the slaves, it was not until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s that the playing field began to level. In this remarkable book, theater producer and historian Stewart F. Lane uses words and pictures to capture this tumultuous century and to highlight the rocky road that black actors have travelled to reach recognition on the Great White Way.
