SevenVenues Culture Club: June 2021

Welcome to the June 2021 SevenVenues Culture Club!

Warmer weather is upon us and this month’s SVCC categories are as hopeful and inspiring as the summer days that lie ahead.

  • National Cancer Survivor’s Day: June 6 – Unbeknownst to many of our patrons, several of the artists we have featured over the years are also cancer survivors. Despite their trials, they prevailed, and our selections feature some of their works including memoirs, biographies and music albums.
  • D-Day: June 6 – The D-Day invasion was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. The Allied soldiers’ death toll was high, estimated to be about 10,000 dead, but their sacrifice led to the defeat of Nazi Germany. This category features a book and a video from two former SevenVenues speakers who share their stories about the historic event.
  • National Best Friends Day: June 8 – Many of the plays and musicals that have graced our stages have not only regaled our audiences, but have placed an important emphasis on the value of friendship. For National Best Friends Day, we have rounded up a collection of past SevenVenues performances that highlight some of theatre’s most renowned friendships.
  • Father’s Day: June 20 – This month’s Father Day category highlights the works of some of the famous comedian fathers who have played our stages over the years. It also includes a memoir from Tina Sinatra, the daughter of the incomparable Frank Sinatra who played Scope Arena in 1976.

Remember, all our book, music and video selections are related to artists and performances that have taken place at a SevenVenues property. If you have a request, please let us know on our SevenVenues Culture Club Facebook group.

Happy reading, listening and watching!

TheOddCouple_Book.jpg   The Odd Couple
Neil Simon

This classic comedy opens as a group of the guys assembled for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidious, depressed and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but as the action unfolds Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean-freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as The Odd Couple is born.

CPL_Logo.png NPL_Logo.png VBPL_Logo.png
Godot_Book.jpg   Waiting for Godot
Samuel Beckett

The story revolves around two seemingly homeless men simply waiting for someone—or something—named Godot. Vladimir and Estragon wait near a tree, inhabiting a drama spun of their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes, and nonsense, which has been interpreted as mankind’s inexhaustible search for meaning. Beckett’s language pioneered an expressionistic minimalism that captured the existential post-World War II Europe. His play remains one of the most magical and beautiful allegories of our time.

Hamlet_Book.jpg   Hamlet
William Shakespeare

Hamlet is Shakespeare's most popular, and most puzzling, play. It follows the form of a "revenge tragedy," in which the hero, Hamlet, seeks vengeance against his father's murderer, his uncle Claudius, now the king of Denmark. Much of its fascination, however, lies in its uncertainties. Among them: What is the Ghost—Hamlet's father demanding justice, a tempting demon, an angelic messenger? Does Hamlet go mad, or merely pretend to?

Tempest_Book.jpg   The Tempest
William Shakespeare

The Tempest gives us a magician, Prospero, a former duke of Milan who was displaced by his treacherous brother, Antonio. Prospero is exiled on an island, where his only companions are his daughter, Miranda, the spirit Ariel, and the monster Caliban. When his enemies are among those caught in a storm near the island, Prospero turns his power upon them through Ariel and other spirits. The characters exceed the roles of villains and heroes. Prospero seems heroic yet has an appetite for revenge. Caliban seems to be a monster but appears heroic in resisting Prospero. Miranda’s engagement to Ferdinand, the Prince of Naples and a member of the shipwrecked party, helps resolve the drama.

JimGaffigan_Book.jpg   Dad is Fat
Jim Gaffigan

Though he grew up in a large Irish-Catholic family, Jim was satisfied with the nomadic, nocturnal life of a standup comedian, and was content to be "that weird uncle who lives in an apartment by himself in New York that everyone in the family speculates about." But all that changed when he married and found out his wife, Jeannie "is someone who gets pregnant looking at babies." Five kids later, the comedian whose riffs on everything from Hot Pockets to Jesus have scored millions of hits on YouTube, started to tweet about the mistakes and victories of his life as a dad. Dad is Fat is sharply observed, explosively funny, and a cry for help from a man who has realized he and his wife are outnumbered in their own home.

BillEngvall_Book.jpg   Just A Guy: Notes from a Blue Collar Life
Bill Engvall

In this hilarious and heartfelt memoir, Bill Engvall takes you on the rollicking ride of his life, beginning with his childhood in Texas and adolescence in Arizona, to following his dream as a standup comic and, gulp, singer; to his brief stint in children's theater while sharing the stage and the back of a van with the director's dog, and as a movie extra with forked tongue and cloth claws; to his bumbling and riotous courtship, then marriage to Gail, the love of his life; and, finally, fatherhood, where he remains, to this day, a well-meaning, but flawed parent.
