Dance Theatre of Harlem
Virginia Johnson, Artistic Director
with Virginia Symphony Orchestra
and Virginia Chorale
There was joyous news in The New York Times in April 2013: "After nearly 10 years on hiatus, Dance Theatre of Harlem is back… [with] reasons to celebrate." The fabled company, created by Arthur Mitchell and beloved around the world, has risen like a phoenix after hard times and a decade of rebuilding. At the centerpiece of this jubilant return engagement is Robert Garland's new work, Gloria, a tribute to the spiritual history of Harlem, set to Poulenc's stunning masterwork performed for the first time to live music with the full Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Chorale.
