Yo-yo Ma is one of the preeminent classical musicians in the world. He was born in Paris to Chinese parents, but spent most of his youth in New York. He took up the cello at the age of 4, later studying with Leonard Rose of the Julliard School. He graduated from Harvard in 1976.

In 1998, he established the Silk Road Project, a series of concerts and discs meant to revive and update the kind of cultural interchange that occurred on the ancient trade route between Asia and Europe. Mr. Ma has made over 75 albums amd won more than 15 Grammy Awards. - The New York Times
