Nicole Henry, vocalist
Attucks Jazz Club

The Attucks Jazz Club season starts off singing! With a voice that draws sighs and applause, phrasing that leaves you hanging on every note, and a gift for reaching the emotional core of a song, this acclaimed jazz vocalist brings new life to whatever she sings, including the American Songbook, classic and contemporary jazz titles, current standards, blues, soul, and her own originals.

Nicole Henry’s vocal chops and stage-commanding charisma have earned her a 2013 Soul Train Award for Best Traditional Jazz Performance, Top-10 spots on the Billboard charts, and rave reviews in such publications as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Jazz Times, Essence, and more.

She has headlined in venues from New York to Tokyo, Madrid to Moscow, Paris to Shanghai, including the best-known jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S. and abroad. Beyond the stage, Lewis has captured a vast audience through her recordings: her 2004 debut CD The Nearness of You gained global attention; the following year’s Teach Me Tonight reached #1 in Japan and was named HMV Japan’s Best Vocal Jazz Album of 2005. In 2008, The Very Thought of You reached #7 on Billboard’s jazz chart. In 2011, Henry changed directions from the American Songbook to include originals, soul, and even a touch of gospel, reaching the Top 20 on the jazz and smooth jazz charts. Her live 2013 album So Good, So Right: Nicole Henry Live showcases inspired renditions of some of her favorite 1970s hits from such iconic artists as Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, The Commodores, and Gladys Knight.
